Positive Ageing

The Study
Positive Ageing in the Borough of Queenscliffe is a significant Council study that was undertaken to better understand the needs and implications of an ageing population. The Study was guided by a Project Steering Committee and also included extensive research and consultation with community members.

A key objective of the study was to present findings in such a way that they informed future directions rather than simply developing a short term action plan.

Major Findings
The Borough of Queenscliffe is an enviable community in which to age. The consultation and research findings demonstrate that the Borough (the community, service providers and Council) have already achieved so much in successfully creating an ageing-friendly community.

The strategic directions therefore have not been developed in response to a gap in service provision or an immediate need. Rather, they emphasis the continuation of existing work as well as identifying a range of initiatives that support the Borough to continuously improve and become one of the leading municipalities for older people in Australia.

Based on the consultation findings, research and policy context, the Project Steering Committee selected the following key areas for consideration:
Valuing, Contributing and Participating

For the Borough community, positive ageing is about:

  • Being valued by both individuals and the community as a whole;
  • Being able to contribute to society; and
  • Participating in the community and leading an active life.

Ensuring that older people have an opportunity to do all of these things is essential if the Borough is to continue to be an ageing-friendly community.
